Retain Pro Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

(Applies to version 9)

What are the system requirements?
Retain Pro Version 9 will run on Windows 2000, XP, Vista, and 7 (32 bit and 64 bit). The program requires about 15 MB of RAM, Pentium 4 or higher CPU and about 100 MB hard drive storage space for the program and your Retain Pro project files. Minimum screen resolution is 1024 X 768 at 96 DPI or 1440 X 900 at 120 DPI. When using minimum screen resolution “Small Fonts” are required. Internet access and an email address is required. The software does not come with a CD, but assigns you a Product Activation Code (PAC) number and Installation Code to enable you to download and install it on multiple computers, subject to your license agreement.

What types of retaining walls can I design?
You can design, or analyze, nearly any configuration of cantilevered retaining wall, with nearly any loading condition. Tapered stems, gravity walls, segmental, gabion, multi-wythe large block walls, and soldier piles. Restrained (basement) walls too. See List of Features on home page for complete list. Material can be either concrete or masonry, or a combination.

Does the program conform to current codes?
Yes, Version 9 conforms to applicable sections of IBC 2009, CBC '07), ASCE 7-05, ACI 318-08, MSJC '08, and AASHTO LRFD. All allowable stresses and load factors are adjustable or set as defaults.

What is the licensing policy for Retain Pro 9?
Retain Pro 9 is offered in three license categories: Single user-4 license allows installing on up to four computers for simultaneous use. Single user-12 is the same except allow up to 12 installs, and the Network License for installation on a server which can serve up to 25 connected computers. See full description on our Support page.

Is a demo available?
Yes, you can download a demo from the home page on the website. It will be the full program with only a few features disabled. The program is about 4MB, but you may need considerably more - we advise out users to allow for 100MB. You will need a high-speed Internet connection. You can then activate the demo by ordering and receiving an email acknowledgement with a Product Activation Code (PAC) and Installation Code (IC).

Can I download the program after ordering?
Yes, if you order by credit card you will receive an instant email acknowledgement containing a Product Activation Code (PAC) and Installation Code (IC) to enter after downloading and installing the demonstration version. The user's manual in downloadable in pdf from the program, or a hard copy can be ordered online.

Is my online order by credit card secure?
Yes. Your information will be encrypted between servers and browsers across the Internet and will be hidden from the prying eyes of hackers.

What expertise do I need to use the program?
You do need to have an engineering background, preferably an EIT or PE license status. It is a time saving tool intended for professional use. You should have the technical capability to design a relatively complex retaining wall by hand calculations. If you're a bit rusty, a supplemental book Basics of Retaining Wall Design is available for purchase, or may be included in your purchase option.

Can I buy with a purchase order?
No, prepayment is required for all orders.

What about foreign orders?
You can order and download the program from anywhere there is an Internet connection. A shipping charge for a bound copy of the User's Manual and/or Basics of Retaining Wall Design of $25 will be added if outside the USA 50 states, Puerto Rico, and Canada.

Can I return it if I don't like it?
Yes, we do offer a 60-day guarantee. You will need to return it in re-saleable condition within 60 days of purchase, and a statement that the program has been removed from your hard drive, and we will confirm from our end. Be careful, since you will then be ineligible for any future upgrade discounts.

What comes with my order?
The program is downloadable from the Internet, but if you order the user's manual or Basics of Retaining Wall Design they will be sent by mail.

Can I pay by check?
Yes, just check the box under Method of Payment on the online order form. You will receive your email receipt with activation codes when your check is received.

How long does it take to get the program?
Five minutes to download and install the program.

Are all the bugs out?
We certainly hope so, but they could be in any of the nearly one-half million lines of computer code in Retain Pro. We are diligent in checking and quick response to any reports of errors. You should monitor our Website SUPPORT page for any announcements. You will also receive periodic messages "Do you want to check for updates?" which will be downloadable and keep you current.

What if I need technical support?
It's free until 1/1/11. Maybe longer.

Can I upgrade from an earlier version?
Yes. See the available discounts at www.retainpro.com.

Can I convert my Version 6.1, 2005, or 2007 files to Retain Pro 9?
Yes, there is a built-in utility for doing this.

What CAD software will work with the .DXF files I would create?
Any software that supports AutoCAD .DXF files.

How easily can I get technical support?
We want to help you use the program productively and are always ready to answer your questions and offer help. In addition to the online Tutorials (accessed from the HELP button) there is a QuickHelp feature which is accessible from any screen and explains all entries. On our Support page there are instructions for fax, email, and voice support.

How am I informed about patches and updates?
Retain Pro 2007 has a built-in automatic maintenance update utility (AutoUpdate) so you will never be out of date. Notices are also posted on our support page.

Is there an annual maintenance fee?
Not yet. But we do make available new releases about once per year with added features and improvements based upon user suggestions. The cost of these optional upgrades is modest.

Can anyone use the online User's Forum?
No, this is for licensed version 2007 users only.

Can I design property line walls?
Yes. A property line may be on either side of the wall.

What about seismic design?
It's included in version 2007 and handles earthquake loading for either cantilevered or restrained walls, and can also include wall self-weight in the seismic calculations.
